The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s annual Pop Up Garden has returned for its third year, transforming a forgotten outdoor area into a gorgeous, landscaped community space.
PHS has created a literal beer garden at 313 S. Broad Street across from the Kimmel Center. Conceptualized by FCM and Groundswell Design Group, the space allows for dining and drinking under a lush tree canopy amid twinkling lights.
The picnic-inspired menu was created by the Garces Group and features savory sandwiches, hot dogs, and short ribs topped with a buttermilk fried onion. There are some lighter options as well, such as a grilled veggie sandwich, salads, fresh fruit, and more. The desserts are not to be forgotten, with pies in a jar and ice cream sandwiches among the selection. (Rachel didn’t eat, but is looking forward to the pies in a jar next time.)
As for the beer, local breweries Victory Brewing Company (Rachel had the Victory Summer Love Ale.),Yards Brewing Company, and Philadelphia Brewing Company are all features. (There are non-alcoholic refreshments as well like iced coffee and tea, lemonade, and cucumber mint water.)
To make the experience ever more magical, UArts students occasionally have impromptu performances and exhibitions of visual arts.
Insider Tip: bring a board game from home.
Be warned, however, that the garden will only be around until October… so go see a Kimmel performance this summer and have your dinner in a beautiful garden, or skip Center City Sips in lieu of supporting PHS.
